Gun Owners Should be Required to Hold Insurance

We urge you to introduce legislation that would:

1. Require all gun owners to carry insurance in case the weapon is used to murder or maim anyone - by the owner or by someone else. The insurance would be used to cover their medical bills and funeral costs as well as pain and suffering. This would be similar to auto insurance that all car owners are required to carry.

2. Require those who sell guns to ensure that the buyer has insurance and a license for the ammunition and the weapon. If not, the seller would be liable for any injury or death caused by the weapon s/he sold.

Why is this important?

In light of the recent horrific events in Connecticut, the time to act to regulate guns is now. Here is an idea that people on any side of the argument should have no problem supporting.

1. People who own guns should be required to carry insurance in case the weapon is used to murder or maim anyone - by themselves or someone else. The insurance would be used to cover their medical bills and funeral costs as well as pain and suffering. We are all required to carry auto insurance. If someone is at fault in an accident, the other person's medical bills are covered.

2. Those who sell guns and ammunition should be required to ensure the person has insurance and a license for the ammunition and the weapon. If not, the seller should be liable.
