Guns Do Not Belong In Libraries

Did you know that libraries in Washington cannot prohibit patrons from carrying guns? My niece Aileen, a librarian in the Spokane Public Library was recently alarmed when she had to concede to a gun carrying patron that he could carry his gun in the library. One of Aileen’s responsibilities is to lead a children’s reading time. The possible scenarios arising from the combination of guns, children, and other library visitors is, unfortunately, not difficult to imagine. RCW 9.41.300 must be amended to include libraries among the few public institutions where firearms are prohibited. This petition asks our legislators for the 36th district to lead in banning guns from Washington’s public libraries.

Why is this important?

I signed Aileen Luppert's MoveOn petition to ban guns in libraries, and MoveOn asked me to start a local petition in my legislative district. I'm frightened for Aileen's safety, and the safety of all library patrons.
