Help put a stop to fracking in California

I am writing to ask that you support SB-1132, co-authored by Senators Mitchell and Leno, which would impose a moratorium on fracking, acidization and other dangerous well stimulation techniques.

Fracking is a dire threat to California's air and water and to the climate. California's ongoing historic drought demonstrates the urgency of confronting climate change now, instead of allowing fossil fuel development to escalate the damage from climate change.

There are no regulations that can make fracking, acidizing or other radical methods of extracting oil from shale safe. However it's regulated, fracking contaminates water, produces toxic air pollution, creates dangerous wastewater, industrializes communities, and accelerates climate change by allowing the fossil fuel industry to burn and extract otherwise inaccessible oil and gas. The only safe way forward for California is to halt to this inherently dangerous process. That’s why this bill is so important.

For the sake of our air, water, health and climate, please support SB-1132.

Why is this important?

Last year, the oil industry succeeded in stopping anti-fracking measures in the California Legislature. Since then, fracking has continued to expand in California, putting our communities and the climate at risk. But now it’s our chance to fight back. Senators Holly Mitchell and Mark Leno introduced SB 1132, a strong moratorium bill that, if passed, will protect California from fracking.

The oil industry will spend huge amounts of money and exert tremendous political pressure fighting this bill, so we need to speak out to make it clear that we expect our elected officials to vote for a fracking moratorium.
