Congress should pass legislation requiring Facebook, Google and LinkedIn to reveal to individuals, on an annual basis and at no charge, the complete personal profiles they assemble about our lives.
Why is this important?
Given the enormous amount of highly personal data they gather and market, Facebook, Google and LinkedIn must be held accountable. Without the ability to challenge errors and remove sensitive information, we’re reduced to an algorithm’s assessment of who we are — right, wrong or damning. The government forces credit-rating firms to reveal our financial dossiers once a year at no charge. It should demand similar accountability from data aggregators.
