Hold the press accountable for their actions

The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees us the freedom of the press and we all cherish and appreciate that we have that right in this country. We all also trust that with along with that freedom there is implied trust that the members of the press will consider it their duty and responsibility to make every effort to verify the accuracy of the news items before publishing them as news. We have all seen failures if not deliberate omissions of the press to make any efforts to verify news that was released in most political campaigns of recent years and the targets have been all the major political parties; it is not a one sided scheme. So regardless of your political persuasion you should be interested in giving the press some incentive to vet their stories prior to publishing. Please sign this petition to our federal and state governments to take up this issue and render a legislative solution that, while not infringing on the 1st amendment, gives the press the incentive to not publish fake news or any news stories that cannot be verified prior to publication.

Why is this important?

There is much concern that fake news is effecting election campaigns of all parties. I want our elected officials, both state and federal to make an effort to find a legislative solution that provides an incentive to not publish fake news while at the same time not infringing on the first amendment guarantee of a free press.
