Under the Environmental Justice law in CT, PSEG is not required by law to negotiate a community benefits agreement WITH ANYONE. The law makes it clear that they MAY enter into an agreement.
The Citizen's Advisory Committee has worked for more than a year with input from many segments of the Bridgeport community to develop and negotiate an agreement that will close the powerplant, improve health outcomes, provide meaningful jobs, and economic benefits for Bridgeport.
. The $7 million dollars in financial support, the meaningful employment opportunities , and the closure of the coal-fired powerplant by 2021 is a major VICTORY because I understand the devastating medical, social, and economic implications of the adverse health effects from long-term exposure to black coal pollution.
Why is this important?
This is about JUSTICE for the low-income and communities of color who have borne the Lions' share of ENVIRONMENTAL degradation which has contributed to chronic diseases, destruction of communities, and loss of economic opportunity.
