We demand the Commission on Presidential Debates modify the 2016 format to include a real-time fact-checking component. We demand an impartial fact-checking organization alert the moderator to questionable statements at the end of each segment, at which time the candidates will be given an opportunity to stand by or amend their statement.
Why is this important?
American voters deserve the truth. But too often, politicians get away with bending said truth, or even worse, completely disregarding or distorting facts to fit their desired message. And many times, these untruths go unchallenged. In a live, nationally-televised debate, it's crucial that these statements be clarified, during the broadcast, while voters are still processing their opinions.
We demand that the Commission verify the candidates' answers and statements, identify any factual inconsistencies, and allow the moderator to challenge the candidates at pre-arranged intervals.
