Increase in Human Rights Violations Against Indigenous Guatemalan Environmental Activists

On June 29, fisherman and environmental activist Eduardo Bin Poou was arrested by authorities and is being detained indefinitely in Izabal, Guatemala . His only crime is organizing to protect Quechi lands and waters from pollution by a Swiss owned nickel mine. Also, on July 3, in San Juan Sacatepequez, 17 peaceful Kacquikel Mayan protesters were wounded while protesting the illegal construction of a huge cement firm on their land. We ask that you contact the Guatemalan Embassy and other representatives of the Guatemalan government, and register your concerns.

Why is this important?

We must not have a repeat of the repression and massacres on the 1980s, when our government condoned gross human rights violations against the Guatemalan people, in particular against indigenous communities. Stop the attacks on environmental and human rights activists.
