We support raising the Massachusetts gasoline tax by 19 cents a gallon to restore its purchasing power to what it was when last raised in 1991 and to provide adequate funding of roads, bridges and mass transit.
Why is this important?
Governor Patrick has proposed a bold plan to make taxes more progressive and to raise money to pay for roads, bridges, mass transit and education. The legislature has taken his proposal under advisement and will probably pare it down. The gas tax has not been raised since 1991. It's time for drivers to pay their way.
