Institute Civil Rights Protections in the Referendum Process

Prevent propositions and referendums on any ballot decided by popular vote that limit the civil rights of a group of people based on race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.

Why is this important?

Civil and political rights are a class of rights that protect individuals' freedom from unwarranted infringement by governments, private organizations and fellow citizens and ensure one's ability to participate in the civil and political life of the state without discrimination or repression. Part of the reason that we have civil right's legal protections is because historically, different groups of people have been denied those rights at all levels of society based on their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability or national origin. The civil rights of a group of people should not be allowed to be curtailed in any way through the use of popular vote.
