To: President Donald Trump

Introduce legislation that mandates annual reporting on gun violence in America.

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
Introduce legislation that mandates annual reporting on gun violence in America.
Currently the Tiahrt amendments severely restrict the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms from disclosing crime gun data to the public under the Freedom of Information Act and bar admissibility of such data in civil suits against the gun industry. Additionally, Congress annually inserts riders into the budgets of the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health barring grant money from being used “in whole or in part, to advocate or promote gun control.”

We therefore call upon the Obama Administration to introduce legislation that overrides the Tiahrt amendments, mandates annual AFT reporting on gun violence in America, and permits the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health to perform and fund research on gun violence in America.

Why is this important?

One of the most insidious of the NRA's tactics in its war against reasonable gun control policies in America is the Tiahrt amendments which not only severely restrict the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms from disclosing its data on gun violence and illegal gun trafficking under the Freedom of Information Act but also bar such data from being used in civil suits against gun manufacturers.

Additionally the NRA has successfully lobbied Congress to place restrictions on both the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health, preventing them from engaging in or funding research into the effects of gun violence on the nation's health and safety.
