ISS Housing Petition: Updating ISS Housing policy to help both students and the ISS

Housing Petition

To: Deputy Rector of Facilities, ISS, Den Haag

1. The Facilities desk of the ISS has told students that once a self-financed student living in an ISS residence terminates their rental agreement with the Institute they are not welcome to move back into an ISS residence again at a later date.

While many self-financed students travel over the summer months to do field research, they are also forced to pay rent to the ISS for empty rooms. This situation is untenable to many self-financed students and forces them to choose between a place to live in the fall or their ability to do field work.

With more and more self-financed students coming to study at the ISS we believe that the time has come to reevaluate these policies.

We the undersigned students of the ISS ask that this policy be reviewed and changed due to the fact that it causes financial hardships for many self-financed students. We ask that self-financed students be allowed to move out one time over the summer months and be allowed to move back into ISS residences in the fall if they so desire, and/or if students do not reside in their rooms over the summer months that they be offered a reduced rate for the time they are away from the ISS.

We believe that changing this policy would be mutually beneficial to both self-financed students and the ISS. Self-financed students would save money by not paying rent while not living near the ISS and the ISS would generate rental income in the fall when the self-financed students move back into residence. The current policy poses a serious problem for the ISS if self-financed students decide to move out for the summer and not move back into the residence in fall. The Institute stands to lose rental income from many self-financed students this year for the summer as well as the fall if this policy is not changed.

2. The Facilities desk of the ISS has told NFP students that they are not allowed to terminate their rental agreement with the ISS. We the undersigned students of the ISS ask that this policy be reviewed and changed so that NFP students have the same rights as self-financed students as described above in section 1 of this document. Specifically, we ask that NFP students be allowed to terminate their rental contract with the ISS if they so desire and/or that when NFP students do not reside in their rooms over the summer months that they also be offered a reduced rate of rent for the time they are away from the ISS.

***Please sign this petition before Monday June 18, 2012. The EC will be meeting with the ISS administration early next week to discuss these issues.

Why is this important?

This petition addresses students`concerns re rental costs over the summer months. The petition also addresses students`concerns about not being allowed to terminate rental contracts with the ISS. The petition also addresses ISS policy as stated by the facilities desk that students are not allowed to move back into ISS residence if they have moved out of residence at an earlier date.
