It's time for action on gun safety in Oregon

Enough is enough. Twice in two years, reasonable gun safety proposals have not even received a vote in the Oregon Legislature. No solution is perfect, but we must act now to save lives. We ask you to commit now to passing reasonable gun safety laws at your next opportunity.

Why is this important?

Gun violence is a recurring tragedy in Oregon with a person dying from a gunshot almost every day. Horrific shootings like those at Reynolds High School and Clackamas Town Center focus our attention on this public health crisis and the need for our leaders to take action.

It is time for the Oregon Legislature to act to reduce gun violence. In both 2013 and 2014, the Legislature declined to bring gun violence legislation to the floor for a vote. Although no single law will end gun violence, there are simple, proven steps to reduce violence – like requiring a background check every time someone buys a gun.

We, the people of Oregon, demand that our leaders take action to address gun violence. It is a preventable tragedy and the time for excuses is over. We call on our legislators to act, and to commit themselves to action today. We will be watching.
