I support President Obama's efforts to change immigration laws by creating a path for the millions of families who have lived here for years and whose children are born Americans to gain citizenship by meeting the requirements to learn English, go to college and earn a degree in an area needed in our economy or join the armed forces and serve honorably.
Why is this important?
My mother emigrated from New Brunswick, Canada, to the US at 16 to help her parents and her 10 younger siblings. The US's Great Depression was starting to affect Canada, but her uncle had done well in the US as a barber and rental property owner. The new immigrants, and their children, many born in the US, are also helping their families and helping the US by taking the jobs even young Americans won't do.
