Jesse White: Get Our Drivers Out of Jail
I have witnessed many drivers in Illinois that are incarcerated for driving on suspended/revoked that are repeat offenders because of the laws of this state. The Cook County Department of Corrections is so full of these persons who are just sitting in jail instead of doing something productive. Illinois claims that it is costing the taxpayers lots of money to house these inmates. I propose that there be some programs put into place to ease some of the burden on taxpayers, by putting in place new laws for this. Repeat offenders should be required to complete a program that would demand a drivers license instead of incarceration. I have visited the jail several times and it is need of many of the services that the drivers could offer. There are drivers incarcerated with inmates that have committed other very serious crimes of violence and the drivers are sitting amongst the worst criminals. I believe if there were some other programs put into place this would ease some of the overcrowding and also put safe and legally responsible drivers on the road instead of just sitting in a cell. When a driver gets caught driving and goes to jail, it should be made mandatory that in order to get out of jail, a driver should have to complete a drivers course and obtain a license before being released.
Why is this important?
Many people are incarcerated in the Cook County Jail for driving on suspended revoked in Illinois and they need help instead of incarceration. The jail is so full of drivers that have done nothing except for driving on suspended and some have never even had a license. The jail could use this room for more serious crimes and the people could use a program to help them get their license. We need some laws changed to cut down on the number of persons incarcerated.
