Dear President Obama and members of the 113th Congress,
We the people of the United States of America support and demand justice for Oliver B. Mitchell III. Mr. Mitchell is a U. S. Citizen, U. S. Veteran and former VA employee turned whistleblower.
In March 2009, Mr. Mitchell made allegations to the VA OIG that management officials at the nation’s largest VA Medical Center, located in Los Angeles, California, engaged in a systemic scheme to purge veteran medical consults and manipulate patient wait times. Despite the overwhelming evidence, the VA OIG deferred their investigation to the local hospital, who ultimately denied any wrongdoing. However, it was noted by the medical center in their response to the VA OIG that they were “instructed to mass purge all orders older than six months.” Mr. Mitchell contends that management officials blatantly lied and began a cover-up. Mr. Mitchell continued his efforts and reported his findings to government officials as what he believed were to be of “grave” concern.
In January 2011, Mr. Mitchell then reported his findings to both the House and Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs, to which he states “neither committee replied.” Then just two months later, in March 2011, Mr. Mitchell was terminated and removed from his position within the agency.
Since his removal and beginning in 2012, we hear reports of Congressional investigations made into Mr. Mitchell’s allegations. Now in 2014 we hear accounts of the number of untold veteran deaths, the staggering amounts of cancelled patient appointments, and the destruction of veterans’ medical documents. All of which was “first” reported by Mr. Mitchell back in 2009.
We the people believe Mr. Mitchell had factually reported the “truth” beginning in March 2009 and up until present day. In a recent news article, Mr. Mitchell was quoted saying “had government officials listened to me back in 2009 and had congress acted back in 2011 we could have prevented these preventable deaths.”
Mr. President, we the people of the United States of America hereby demand and request The Office of The President and the 113th Congress uphold the whistleblower laws of America, and by ceasing all retaliation towards and against Mr. Mitchell, and by offering Mr. Mitchell an opportunity to appear before Congress and the citizens of the nation to tell his side of the story. Mr. President and members of the 113th Congress, anything less would be un-American and unconstitutional.
