Keep Cats Indoors in Eau Claire County

Every house cat allowed to roam free out-of-doors kills wild birds. For the health of both cats and wild birds, all cats should be kept indoors unless leashed without exception. The Eau Claire County Humane Association's policy of providing cats to rural properties isn't good for cats or birds. I favor a ban on "barn cat adoption" in Eau Claire County and ask that the Eau Claire City Council tie a portion of all future ECCHA funding to educating the public about the significant impact of free-roaming cats on wild birds, chipmunks, voles, squirrels, and rabbits.

Why is this important?

Free-roaming cats, unwittingly or intentionally allowed to roam free are the number one cause of unnatural mortality in wild birds - up to three billion per year! Educating the public about the hazard of free-roaming cats and changing the behaviors and beliefs of pet owners is critical to the survival of birds.
