Label Li-Ion Battery Toxicity
This campaign has ended.
Dear; FCC Commissioner
This petition is being sent to you because people have been killed and injured from using Li-Ion batteries in a non abusive normal manner. To sell a product that contains chemicals that can kill, and not disclose it, is unethical and immoral. Now that I know the threats associated with them I can react properly if an accident where to occur, but by selling the batteries to the public by the billions without educating the people, you are setting the stage for an accident to be worse than it needs to be. Please give the people the choice to know so that they can decide for themselves whether or not the product is worth the risk. Thank You

Why is this important?
Lithium Ion batteries are subject to thermal runaway which can cause them to blow up or vent toxic gasses. The explosion is not the only threat. The electrolyte in these batteries is LiPF6 (lithium Hexafluoraphoshate). These batteries have no toxicity warning on them. Thermal runaway of LiPF6 releases it's fluoride ions into the air where it reacts and bonds with Hydrogen creating Hydrogen Fluoride (HF).
Hazard Summary :
Toxic by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed.
Extremely corrosive and destructive to tissue. Specialized
medical treatment is required for all exposures. May be fatal if
inhaled, absorbed through skin, or swallowed.
The EPA labels fluoride as more toxic than lead and slightly less toxic than Arsenic.
These manufacturers keep this information suppressed in order to maintain profit and because the FCC doesn't require them to label the threat. I don't know about anyone else, but I like to know what threats lurk in my home. So let's tell the FCC that we have the right to know what is being sold to us and label it.
