The Law Enforcement Only (L.E.O.) initiative is a way for Vermont to lead the country. This proposal allows law enforcement agencies and the Vermont department of Public Safety to monitor sex offenders in a different way.
Why is this important?
Vermont has had critical errors on the audits that have been performed since Act 58 passed in 2009, costing the State of Vermont money; with the financial constraints that the State finds itself in, now is the time to save money. With the registry bloated by the low, medium, and moderate risk offenders, the Department of Public Safety has less time to monitor and track the offenders who are high risk and judged to pose a greater risk to the community.
