We, the undersigned, are residents of the City of Hammond, who urge our leaders to amend Ordinance #8762 Subsection 91.035, which passed June 2006 Subsection 91.035 Domestic Animals & Fowl to allow backyard chicken keeping (females only) in the city limits year round with reasonable parameters similar to other communities in the area.
Why is this important?
Backyard chicken keeping is a healthy, economic, and sustainable way to feed and enrich ourselves, our families and our community. Besides making great pets, hens provide us with fresh eggs and encourage local sustainable living, invoking our right to control our food supply. Backyard chicken keeping also offers educational opportunities.
