Len Raphael for City Auditor: Oakland CA voter opt-out of paper campaign mailers
We ask the Oakland City Council to pass an ordinance allowing voters to provide annually updated email addresses to the Alameda County Registrar of Voters in return for the choice of opting out of home-delivered paper election campaign literature from registered committees and candidates.
Why is this important?
Reduce carbon footprint and wasted natural resources. Lower the entry barrier to candidates and committees who don't have a lot of money.
The most basic color glossy mailers cost 50 cents each to mail. For Oakland with 60,000 highly likely voter unique households, that's a minimum of $30,000 to communicate with voters. You need three or more because most mailing pieces get thrown out.
$90K is a lot of favors you'll owe to well to do supporters or you have to be rich to run.
