Leniency for Maurice Brown Jr.

To the honorable judge,

The undersigned petitioners here would like to plead for your leniency in the case of Maurice Brown Jr.

First and foremost, we recognize the seriousness of the crime he has committed, and we understand his actions have caused much pain to the victims, and our hearts and sympathies are with them.

We would also like you to know that Maurice is truly repentant. He took responsibility for his actions and is prepared to suffer the consequences. We plead only that you consider this petition in the context of those who have come to know Maurice over the years and know that he is more than the worst decision in his life.

He is a loving son and brother. In spite of the actions that will send him to prison for the bulk of the remainder of his life, he is a kind and gentle soul. As the eldest of four siblings, he has helped his mother care for them. As the man in the family, he helped his single mother the best he could to manage a modest household. We request that you include his medical assessments and results that point to mental health diagnosis. He has struggled with mental illness for most of his young life. He hears voices and suffers from Major Depressive Disorder, which has led him to self-medicate.

We understand that while this does not justify or undo his actions, it does offer some explanation into his psyche. We hope you can find it in your heart to show him some leniency and consider mental health services. We thank you for your consideration.

Why is this important?

My son is looking at serious time for a crime he committed. We are asking the judge to consider his mental illness in any plea deal negotiations and include services not simply state prison.
