Let Hempstead Save Parking for the People Who Live Here

Too many of us come home and can't find a place to park on our own block. Our streets are full of cars from commuters, businesses, and people who don't live here. That means walking far at night, carrying groceries down the street, and worrying about the safety of our families and elders.

Right now, the Village can't fix this alone. Under New York State law, a village can't save street parking for its residents unless the State gives it permission. So, Hempstead is asking Albany for that permission, and we need your name behind the request.

If the State says yes, the Village could: (1) Create resident parking zones on neighborhood streets; (2) Give permits to residents, and passes for their guests; and (3) Enforce the rules so our spaces stay open for us.

Emergency vehicles and people with disabilities would still have the access they need.

The Village is also updating its overnight parking rules. Parking on the street overnight, tentatively from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., would require a permit. These permits would go to residents in areas without enough driveways or off-street parking. Permits last up to one year, come with a fee set by the Village Board, and don't apply during snowstorms or other emergencies.

This is about something simple: being able to come home. Sign to tell the State that Hempstead residents deserve to park where they live.
