We urge the creation of the post of Philadelphia Poet Laureate and the creation of a volunteer organization to raise money for a modest stipend. A Poet Laureate would be a cultural ambassador for the City and a voice of the Cultural Community to the City's schoolchildren.
Why is this important?
This petition asks Mayor Nutter and City Council to name Philadelphia Poets Laureate. Laureates would serve for one or two years as cultural ambassadors for the city and inspirations to its school children. Other Laureates (Painter-, Sculptor-, Composer-, Dramatist-) could be named. Laureates would be paid a modest salary-comparable to a police lieutenant, let's say-from privately raised funds.
