LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD for political campaigns in America!

To President Barack Obama, Governor Jerry Brown, the Ladies and Gentlemen of the US Congress, and the California Legislature:

I am frustrated that whomever can raise and spend the most cash on advertising has a big advantage in electoral campaigns, from City Council elections all the way to the Presidency of the United States. This is intrinsically unfair, as it allows the wealthiest individuals and organizations to have the most influence in electoral campaigns. Candidates with less funding behind them do not have an equal voice in an election.

This petition calls for legislation to "Level The Playing Field" for every election for public office in this country by limiting the amount that any campaign or political party can spend on advertising in support of any given candidate. Specifically, limit the total permissible airtime minutes on all TV networks, per candidate, per election.

Caps for advertising spending and TV airtime would be different for city, county, state, and national elections, but some kind of reasonable limits are needed to prevent wealthy individuals and/or organizations from unfairly influencing election outcomes.

Please enact appropriate legislation promptly to Level The Playing Field in all U.S. elections.

Respectfully,

Samuel Weinstein, BS, RN

Why is this important?

American Citizens must call on the US Congress to "Level The Playing Field" for every electoral campaign in this country by limiting the amount that any campaign or political party can spend on advertising in support of any given candidate. Specifically, limit the total permissible airtime minutes on all TV networks, per candidate, per election. If all are treated the same, this is not a First Amendment issue as some people claim.

Caps for advertising spending would be different for city, county, state, and national elections, but SOME kind of reasonable limits are needed to prevent wealthy individuals and/or organizations from unfairly influencing election outcomes. I want the American public to collectively put pressure on Congress to enact legislation to that end.
