Make Davis High School Dances Great Again!

We, the students of Davis High School, are deeply concerned about the deteriorating quality of our school dances. The primary issue lies in the restricted song choices provided by the DJ, Blackhat. While Blackhat is a skilled DJ who delivers amazing performances outside of our school events, the constraints placed upon him during Davis High dances create an atmosphere that is unappealing and frustrating for students. As a result, our dances are plagued by low energy, unhappy attendees, and even premature shutdowns.

This is not just an issue of entertainment—it’s about school culture. Our dances should be an environment where students can have fun, build memories, and strengthen our sense of community. Instead, we are seeing a growing trend of discontent that threatens the very existence of our dances. Increasingly, students are discussing organizing separate, unofficial dances to avoid the lackluster atmosphere of the current events.

Our Concerns:

  1. Music Restrictions: The limitations imposed on the DJ prevent him from playing upbeat, popular songs that students want. When the highlight of the night is "Sweet Caroline," we are failing to meet expectations for what a dance should be.
  2. Comparison with Other Schools: Neighboring schools such as Farmington and Layton High are in the same district, bound by the same rules, yet manage to host significantly more engaging dances. Why can’t we?
  3. Impact on Morale and Engagement: The current situation results in unhappy students, frustrated staff, and a growing divide between administration and the student body.
Proposed Solutions:

  1. Better Playlist Options: Allow Blackhat to work with students to create a playlist that meets school guidelines but also includes modern, energetic tracks that students want to dance to.
  2. Collaboration with Administration: Relax some of the overly restrictive rules on music. If other schools in the district can achieve this balance, so can we.
  3. Feedback from Students: Conduct surveys or forums to gather direct input from students about their preferences. Incorporating their voices is essential to creating a positive experience.
  4. Transparency: Clearly communicate which rules are non-negotiable and why, so students understand the constraints and can work collaboratively to make dances better.
We want Davis High dances to be the highlight of our school year—not something to dread or avoid. This petition is a call for urgent action. We deserve the opportunity to enjoy our dances as much as students at other schools in our district. Together, we can make our events memorable and reinvigorate our school spirit.

Please support this petition to advocate for better music, a livelier atmosphere, and a stronger sense of unity at Davis High dances.

Sincerely,
The Students of Davis High School

Why is this important?

This issue cannot wait. With each passing dance, the dissatisfaction among students grows, and we are at risk of losing one of the most cherished traditions of high school life. If this trend continues, more students will turn to unofficial events, fracturing our school community and undermining the purpose of school dances. Now is the time to act, restore excitement to our dances, and rebuild the pride and unity that Davis High deserves.
