Make DC a state
Our country was founded on the principle of no taxation without representation - but it doesn't apply to residents of the nation's capital. Washington, DC should be granted statehood.
Why is this important?
When Congress votes to go to war, or raise taxes, or reduce consumer protections, it affects DC residents like me as much as citizens of Florida or North Dakota. But DC residents are denied the ability to have a say in these decisions. Making matters worse, because DC is not a state, Congress meddles in our affairs -- for example, rom 1998 to 2007, Congress banned a clean needle exchange program that the DC government had implemented, intending to prevent the spread of disease associated with the use of dirty needles.
