Make Presidential Candidates Swear To Tell The Truth
We expect anyone who testifies in a court of law in the United States to swear to "tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth" but we never expect our Presidential candidates to do that. Why? They are running for the highest office in our land and yet now the public and the media write off blatantly false statements made by the candidates as "just politics as usual." Fact checking after the debate is left up to the media. Let's hold our Presidential candidates to a higher standard than that - and at least to a standard we expect in our courts - by having the candidates swear in prior to publicly televised debates. If a candidate then makes a misstatement of fact during the debate, allow that candidate 48 hours to correct the error and post the TRUTH on her/his website. If the candidate doesn't correct the error within that time frame, hold them accountable, impose monetary sanctions for each offense and (if misstatements continue) remove them from upcoming debates.
Why is this important?
Let's hold our Presidential candidates to a standard we expect in our courts - by having the candidates swear to tell "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth" for publicly televised debates.
