Make School Funding Fair for Kids

State budget legislation SB98 passed 6/26/20 makes funding for schools and students unfair. It arbitrarily hurts some schools, families, and children while helping others. Shouldn't all of the students in California receive fair funding in 20/21? Governor Newsom, please send this inequitable budget for schools back to the legislators for amendments to make sure ALL students are funded in 20/21 not just the school districts that aren't growing. Legislators, respectfully, please make sure all children have equal access to their education as codified by statute for decades.

Why is this important?

I am a parent of a student in a public school. We chose our school because my son wasn't thriving in his school. We wanted a school that could meet him where he was in his development, accept him and work with him at his own pace. We found that (and so much more) in our school - a brand new, startup charter, Sycamore Creek Community Charter School, which started with just 63 students, but is projected to over double this fall. If this legislation is signed into law without amendments, our school will likely have to close, as they will not be able to overcome the massive financial shortfall. I am heartbroken at the thought of having to tell my son that the school he loves and holds dear will have to close due to lack of money, and the emotional fallout it will cause. He just spent the last year forging bonds with their teachers, making new friends, and building a community - to have this taken away from him- along with the incredible style of education he is receiving from our school - is incomprehensible. So many other schools will sadly meet this fate, and so many children and their families will be hurt. Please don't allow this bill to pass without being amended.

I cannot believe that we made it through our first year with the possible fate of closing our doors during our second year through no fault of our own. Our community has done the hard work, the blood, the sweat, the tears. We love our school and want to continue to be able to choose a Public Waldorf Education and allow other families to choose what fits their family best as well. We are asking Governor Newsom and the California State Legislators to please just do what is fair and equitable. Our schools and others in our position are not asking for any favors here, just to be allowed to exist in the parameters laid out in our legally binding approved charter. We can only legally follow it if the assumption that the legislature and governor will honor proper allocation of per pupil funding holds true. If you believe in this cause and that your and ALL children should receive equal school funding, please join me and sign our petition that we will send to the governor. We are hoping to collect 1,000,0000 million signatures in 24 hours before it hits Governor Newsom's desk! - Daisy Campos
