It is time we call for comprehensive criminal justice reform in New York State. Let's start by closing Rikers island. The Mayor has proposed a 10-year timeline; this is unacceptable. The inhumane and unconstitutional practices that are rampant at Rikers means many lives are at stake. Let's demand a quicker timeline.
Why is this important?
It is unacceptable that society continues to turn a blind eye to the systemic racism that exists in the criminal justice system. While most of us don't have a daily/active role in the criminal justice system, we do have a say on funding spent on prisons. I suggest we measure every dollar we spend on prisons and jails against every dollar we spend on education and prevention.
