HB 4105, a bill introduced by Michigan Rep. Hornberger to officially de-legitimize Sanctuary City rights, is nothing more than an invitation for unnecessary, unlawful racial and ethnic profiling. In the state of Michigan, home to only two unofficial "Sanctuary Cities," HB 4105 is an unnecessary, unjust, and over-reactive proposal.
Why is this important?
We need our lawmakers to resist getting swept up in the anti-immigrant fervor that the Trump Administration has legitimized. It is a sorry contradiction that Republicans, emboldened by the Trump administration’s fear-mongering, are attempting to increase the scope of government authority by proposing that police officers and civil servants perform the role of full-time liaisons for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office (ICE).
