Move NOW for Serious New Laws to Control the Abuse of Firearms

We, your constituents, DEMAND that you take the lead in enacting real, substantial, gun control laws! We insist that the Unites States Congress pass laws that will close gun show loopholes, require criminal and psychiatric background checks for ALL gun purchases, require a record of gun safety training for anyone seeking to buy a handgun or hunting rifle, and restrict ownership of assault weapons to police and military personnel (since those people-killing machines are completely unnecessary for private self-defense, sport shooting, or any other non-military purpose). While it will take years to see the positive effects of such legislation, the time to act in changing the irresponsible and uncontrolled culture of the firearms industry is NOW. By all means move forward with new initiatives for treating mental illness, too. But do not use tired excuses claiming that such initiatives alone will prevent gun violence. Put the legislation to control firearms FIRST.

Why is this important?

I am part of a growing American "interest group" recently identified by Andy Borowitz in a brilliant satirical essay. That is, I am "an American Opposed to Being Shot." http://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/americans-opposed-to-being-shot-seek-representation-in-washington
