Naparyarmiut

Change the name of "Hooper Bay" back to its traditional name, "Naparyarmiut".

Why is this important?

In an effort to decolonize from forced assimilation, many of us, the descendants of Naparyarmiut, would prefer to legally acknowledge our home town by its original Yup'ik name. The northernmost U.S. city, Utqiagvik, was successful in reverting back to their traditional Inupiaq name and so has the Yup'ik village, Nunam Iqua. There is power in a name. Naparyarmiut warriors were strong and fierce. It's time we take our power back that the colonizers took from us when they changed the name of our beautiful sea-side village to "Hooper Bay". Please, sign this petition if you are in support of changing the name of "Hooper Bay" back to our traditional name, "Naparyarmiut".
