Never Again: A Petition for Kids and Safer Schools

I am aware that DFL Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy and House DFL Floor Leader Jamie Long have expressed their intention to propose an assault weapons ban again next session. They need your support and ours. We, the people of Minnesota, are asking you to put the lives of our children first. We implore you to act. Let's make Minnesota a state where our children can go to school without fear. We are all in this together, let's show that unity and do the right thing.
We have a choice to make. When we see a high-capacity magazine used to inflict mass casualties, we cannot pretend that the solution isn't connected to the tools of violence. The right to bear arms does not extend to the right to possess weapons and accessories designed for mass slaughter.
This is not a partisan issue; it's a matter of saving lives. The argument that certain legislation has "virtually no chance" of passing is a dangerous and cynical one. When the lives of our children are on the line, we must take every chance. The UK, for example, has not had a school shooting since the Dunblane massacre in 1996, a direct result of their decisive legislative action. This is simply one of many instances where action has made a difference.

Why is this important?
I am writing to you today as a deeply concerned Minnesotan and a parent. Within our community, we faced the horrifying reality of a school shooting. This could have been us, and the fact that it wasn't this time doesn't diminish the urgency of the moment. We cannot continue to live with the constant fear that our children are not safe in their schools and arming our teachers or paying for police is not the answer. We can solve this in better ways.
The United States is an outlier. We are the leading country in the world for school shootings. This is a statistic we should all find unacceptable. As of August 27, 2025, there have been at least 44 school shootings this year alone. This isn't an issue of mental health being exclusive to the U.S.; other countries, face similar mental health challenges but do not experience the same epidemic of gun violence. The difference is clear: they have enacted comprehensive gun control measures.
