New Rules for Presidential Debate
Request that TV networks hold a debate for presidential candidates that allows moderators to stop candidates who aren't answering the question asked and a balanced panel of fact checkers who can buzz in when candidate responses are lies or hyperbole.
Why is this important?
We currently have presidential debates that encourage skirting issues, lying, distortion, and exaggeration. I would watch a debate in which none of this were possible or at the very least, identified as such.
Let's propose a debate format that
(1) gives moderators (one Dem, one Repub) the power to interrupt responses that don't answer the question; and
(2) has a balanced panel of fact checkers (with computers) who can buzz in loudly when they hear a lie (with perhaps a softer buzzer for exaggeration/distortion).
Such a debate would be informative and entertaining, a win-win for both the network and the public. I think everybody in the country would tune in!
