This petition is for the purpose of changing the DEFINITION of "within 100 feet of any polling/voting location" to include... "within 100 feet of any person who is in a line waiting to get into a place where they are going to vote." Violating this "safe voting environment" statue should include immediate arrest and criminal FEOLNY charges for assault. This is a FEDERAL CRIME just like if someone goes into someone's mailbox that is not their own and they do not have permission to go into that box.
Our election processes need many reforms and feeling safe and unthreatened while voting is one of THE most important rights of every American and should be defended with the severest of consequences for those who would violate every citizen's equal right to express their vote.
Why is this important?
The 2012 election had many incidences of verbal altercations between law abiding citizens, who were waiting to express their voting choices in our civilized society, as they waited at the polling/voting location and people who showed up just to harass them for exercising their constitutional right to vote. Current laws state that: "No person shall conduct ANY campaigning or electioneering for any candidate or ballot issues within 100 feet of the front door to any polling/voting location.
Since the long lines going into many voting locations went far beyond the 100 feet limit, that is where the verbal harassing and altercations took place.
