No Funding Left Behind

Every child in the state of Colorado has the lawful right to a public education. Too often, children who attend charter and private schools who have problems in those schools get kicked back to their public schools after their October count time, but the funding stays with the charter or private school for the entire school year. This petition is asking the Governor and state legislature to create a more advanced school finance law that would allow the monies to follow the child back to their school that they are forced to go back to by existing law.

Why is this important?

The wave of charter, online, and private schools formed in the past several years have created a common scenario where these schools are allowed to take tax dollars from the public schools. While these schools have the lawful right to exist, they also have the luxury of taking only the students that do not create a behavioral or educational problem for the staff or other students. When a student is forced to leave these schools, the money should not be allowed to stay, but should then follow the student due to the fact that the (Charter/Online/Private) school usually keeps these children on their rolls until after the count time.
