Who's "non-essential"? No governing, no pay

In the event of a government shutdown, hundreds of thousands of federal workers are furloughed, not knowing if or when they might get paid. They are powerless to change their fates. Members of Congress get paid in the event of a government shutdown — no matter what. If federal workers are furloughed, then the members of Congress who shut the government down must also go unpaid.

Why is this important?

Congressmen and women who implement irresponsible government shut downs need to suffer consequences for their recklessness. No work, no pay--Members of Congress must bear the same responsibility for their decisions as those who are most affected by them.
