Legacy Investing, a Virginia-based company, has signed an agreement to purchase the former Minnesota Star Tribune printing plant in North Loop with plans to turn it into a 20-megawatt data center for artificial intelligence and cloud technology. But they are facing mounting opposition from local residents, who don’t want to see water resources depleted, electricity bills skyrocket, and noise pollution increase.
This is not a done deal—the agreement is contingent on a permit. It’s clear that Minnesotans oppose this new development—and the City Planning Commission and the Minneapolis City Council have the responsibility to block it NOW.

Why is this important?
Data center development is ramping up across the country and corporations have their sights set on Minnesota. As these billion dollar companies try to outpace regulations, more than a dozen data center projects have already been proposed in the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” and an active fight is taking place right in Minneapolis.
Very few details have been publicly released about the proposed North Loop data center, and Minnesotans have been packing neighborhood meetings to express their concerns and outrage about the deal and the possible negative impact.
If this data center is allowed to progress in Minneapolis, it will embolden the dozen others proposed across the state to bulldoze over the will of the people and ram through their development with complete disregard to impacts on local communities. This stops here.
