NYC officials; preserve your residents' hearing and quality of life by finding a replacement for ...
I believe there are better alternatives to our emergency vehicle sirens that blast through the congested streets of New York, specifically Manhattan. I believe we should develop an app or a different type of low frequency vibration or sound that could replace the ear shattering sound of sirens. They are unnerving and unrelenting. They have become such a constant, that now even birds replicate the noise. With modern technology as advanced as it is, and with more emergencies bound to occur, it is time to replace this form of noise pollution with a solution that will bring us back our peace and quiet. Some sections of the city, in route of the firehouses, hospitals, or in crime-ridden neighborhoods, never get a break from the sirens. High rise buildings seem to amplify the noise, particularly where there are numerous skyscrapers lined up on a densely packed city block. Please give us back our sanity, our quality of life, our ability to think and concentrate without this constant interruption. We cannot hear on our cell phones, or anything/anyone else, and we are ruining our ears. There has to be a better way to allow these much needed emergency vehicles to operate without negatively impacting the rest of us.
Why is this important?
The continuous ear piercing noise from fire engines, police sirens and ambulances has truly intefered with the quality of life both on the streets and inside our homes. While these services are obviously extremely important, I believe that an alternative can be found or an app can be made to replace this non-stop noise pollution that negatively impacts everyone, including pets, children, newborns, cyclists, drivers and those of us at home (with our windows closed, nonetheless!) The sound is so constant, so ridiculously loud and high pitched, that it can be heard on upper floors and during all hours of the night and day. Some avenues, such as Sixth and Seventh Avenues, seem to have sirens piercing eardrums every five minutes. No one is exempt.
