Ohio Department of Education: Prioritize Life Skills Education
Due to the recent coronavirus pandemic, more kids are having to do remote learning. Therefore, more kids are having to stay at home. Many of these kids have working parents so these kids will have to take care of themselves. There are certain life skills that are needed when caring for oneself, so I believe that schools should take more responsibility for teaching kids these life skills. Whether by requiring students to take a semester/full-year course or by requiring students to have a span of time where they learn these life skills, the Ohio Department of Education should require some form of life skills education in schools.
Why is this important?
Life skills education courses were cut in my school district; however, the need for life skills education increases during the pandemic. Life skills classes have been decreasing due to factors such as a job shortage in life skills teachers, as well as the courses being cut by schools due to budget issues. The life skills classes are supposed to teach you skills like cooking, cleaning, finance, and first aid that can be helpful for kids to have during a pandemic. With kids staying at home for remote learning, they should be able to feed and clean for themselves. Some families may have to budget their money due to the pandemic causing many people to go out of a job. So, knowing how to handle finances can be beneficial for kid’s futures, but especially right now. Lastly, if a kid were to injure themselves at home and no adult was present, it would be helpful if the kid was able to take care of the situation.
How it will be delivered
I plan on mailing the petition signatures with my letter I have written to the Ohio Department of Education.
