One Strong Solution to Identity Theft.

My request is simple. You can call it Joe's Law if you want to honor all of the average Joes in the world. Why not have a Federal Government maintained list of Social Security numbers that are locked so that no new Credit Cards can be issued in your name with that SSN? It seems to me that it would be to enact and use, simply by going to a local security office with appropriate identification and ask that your SSN be locked so that no new Credit Cards could be issued against it. If you wanted a new credit card, you could have it unlocked for 48 hours or for however long it took to create the new card at your bank. Before any bank could issue a new credit card they would have to check to make certain that the SSN provided was unlocked. I am willing to bet that a simple SSN lock would prevent a lot of identity theft. If you think this is viable, ask your congressional representatives for this legislation.

Why is this important?

I have not seen this proposed as a means of preventing identity theft, but if it is as simple as it seems to me, it should have been done years ago. Too many people are being victimized by identity theft and we need a government that is proactive in stopping this problem.
