Oppose "fracking" in California and elsewhere
Why Oppose Fracking?
Here are eight reasons why you, a Californian, should oppose the process of “fracking” proposed by the fossil-fuel industry.
1. Potential contamination of aquifers and other water resources with a secret, undisclosed, and unstudied list of harmful contaminants.
2. Potential to release methane into aquifers and the atmosphere.
3. Increased contribution of greenhouse gases, increasing the rate of global warming.
4. Requirements for tremendous amounts of water in an already water-starved region.
5. Difficulties in collecting, processing, and disposing of wastewater.
6. Destabilization (fracturing) of deep bedrock formations, leading to increased earthquake risks in a region where earthquakes are already a daily occurrence and a major threat.
7. Provides another excuse for not weaning away from fossil fuels instead of increasing our reliance on renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, and geothermal energy.
The array of processes involved in “fracking” has not been studied comprehensively to inform us of both the risks and problems and the overall benefits.
We are being asked, AGAIN, to accept the blithe assurances from the fossil-fuel industry that, “Everything will be alright – just trust us!” So, please join me in urging Assemblyman Rocky Chavez to oppose all issues related to permitting “fracking” that come before the California Assembly.
