Oppose Social Security Cuts
It is being reported that President Obama is going to propose cuts to Social Security benefits in budget negotiations with the Republicans. We believe this is a premature and unnecessary capitulation to Republican demands, not to mention a betrayal of the American people, the principles of the Democratic party, and the President's own campaign promises.
Why is this important?
This week, President Obama is set to propose cuts in Social Security benefits. This is unacceptable. Social Security is not in trouble, and contributes comparatively very little if anything to the deficit. Cutting social security, which is already inadequate, would have grave consequences for people (like my mother) for whom Social Security is their sole source of income. The idea of cutting Social Security is especially absurd when we have an out-of-control military budget, a poorly regulated Wall Street and banking system, and big corporations and billionaires who pay little in taxes.
