Oppose water reservoir in Vernon Hills Park
Victory! The creator of this petition declared the campaign a success. You can still sign the petition to show support.
We respectfully request that the Vernon Hills Park District Board deny the request for a water reservoir and booster pump station in Carriage Green Park on Grosse Pointe Circle.
• We believe that the location of a large concrete water reservoir (measuring 100 feet in diameter and 34 feet high, extending about 10 feet above ground) and a 50’ x 35’ booster pump station in a park is not appropriate.
• It will be better suited to an area such as a business park or office park and such areas already exist in the Village of Vernon Hills. Additional land purchases could also be considered by Lake County Public Works for this structure.
• Carriage Green Park is a small park and the proposed structure would significantly diminish the nature and beauty of this park in terms of its presence as well as the removal of about 15-20 large, mature trees. It would also impact the design flow and overall aesthetics of the park. This park is highly utilized by families with children, dogs and fitness enthusiasts. The park abuts two residential neighborhoods and a retirement home and the proposed location is highly visible from the main thoroughfare of Route 45.
• We believe the proposed water reservoir and booster pump station would reduce property values of the residential neighborhoods.
We, the undersigned, do not feel that this water reservoir is consistent with the Park District’s vision and mission because it would reduce park space, result in removal of healthy mature trees and have a negative effect on the design flow and aesthetics of the park. We also believe it will reduce property values of the residential neighborhoods.
That’s why I signed a petition to the members of the Park District Board including President David Doerhoefer, Vice President Jim Ballowe, Commissioner Cindy Kessler, Commissioner Mike Meline, Commissioner Bruce Robbins, and Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor which says:
“We believe that the construction of a water reservoir and booster pump station in Carriage Green Park is not a suitable fit.”

Why is this important?
We did it!!! Thanks to all of you signing this petition, the Vernon Hills Park District Board of Commissioners officially and unanimously voted to oppose supporting the advancement of the proposed water reservoir at Carriage Green Park at their 5/24/18 board meeting. Aaron Lawlor, Lake County Board Chairman, also heard you and the park district board and sent the following great news:
=========================================================
Below from Aaron Lawlor, Lake County Board Chairman (5/25/18):
I have requested that the Lake County Public Works Department eliminate Carriages Green Park as location for a new water reservoir.
As your representative, your concerns are my concerns. And the more we learned, the more concerned we were! Not only would the proposed reservoir encroach on an already undersized community park; it would also likely create an attractive nuisance with the potential for injury, accidents and liability.
Following our conservation, I spoke with our Public Works staff and have concluded there are no engineering options that sufficiently address the concerns you and your neighbors shared with me over the past couple weeks.
I want to thank you and the Carriages of Grosse Pointe neighborhood for your outreach.
In the future, I have asked staff from LCPW, the Village of Vernon Hills and the Park District to engage me in these types of conversations earlier in the planning process as we could have headed this off as an unworkable option much sooner.
Please share this message with the HOA leadership as well as the recipients and signers of the petition.
As always, please feel free to reach out on this or any other issue.
Best,
Aaron
