Opposing dedicated bicycle lane on Jefferson ave/Hancock st

This project is more harmful than helpful to our community. Our blocks are tertiary streets; diminishing the width of our roadways makes alternate-side cleaning chaotic. Larger trucks will obstruct the flow of traffic, drop-off, and pickup of school children would create a safety issue, senior citizens' services would be disrupted, and more fear due to mobility issues. New multi-unit housing in the area has added to an increase in the number of new residents with families and cars, along with the addition of bus-only lanes on main streets forcing residents to park in the side streets. Cyclists are moving through Hancock and Jefferson seamlessly without a separate lane currently. Sharing the road with cyclists is fine shrinking the existing roadway in these blocks will only create more traffic and more accidents for cyclists and pedestrians.

Why is this important?

Disproportionate rules for establishing bike lanes in this part of Brooklyn will make our neighborhood more congested and unsafe for our residents and pedestrians walking. We have a large number of seniors as well as children attending public, private, and charter schools on these blocks. There are multiple churches, as well as a Freemasonry temple with attendees on weekdays and weekends.

I have collected over 100 signatures - online and in person. The community in and around Bedford-Stuyvesant agrees that bike lanes are great when implemented in the correct locations. Wider streets and avenues are ideal for traffic flow and cyclists. Look at the protected bike lane on 20th and 21st Street in South Slope with a "Shared Use Path" for cyclists and pedestrians.
