Paul Ryan - Wrong Choice as Commencement Speaker
We want to express our disappointment and displeasure with your selection of Paul Ryan as featured commencement speaker for Benedictine College graduates. He represents the opposite of what your college has traditionally stood for. Many of us will gather near the entrance of Benedictine College, 2nd & L Streets, at 8:30 Saturday morning, May 11, to vocally and visually communicate our disapproval of Paul Ryan's budget proposal and social philosophy, as well as his presence at Benedictine in Atchison.
Why is this important?
The president of Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, asked Paul Ryan to speak at commencement. However, Ryan is a terrible choice because his proposed budget is immoral and in direct opposition to Catholic teachings. Ryan supports tax cuts for the wealthy and increased military spending while limiting or decreasing social programs that help families, the poor, and the middle class. He proposes capping Pell Grants at today's maximum and raising interest rates on student loans. Most Benedictine students rely on these government programs.. He says that his views are based on the philosophy of Ayn Rand who believed that helping others was immoral. He is not a positive role model for the graduates of Benedictine..
