The San Leandro City Council was set to approve a rigorous ordinance that would allow a marijuana dispensary to open in San Leandro. A dispensary would be a great alternative to the black market or trips out of town, for medical marijuana patients. It would particularly benefit elderly patients or those with infirmities that makes them unable to go shopping in Oakland.
Research shows that marijuana dispensaries do not attract crime. Indeed, in Oakland they have helped to promote economic development and the gentrification of neighborhoods.
There is no reason to not have a dispensary, but Mayor Stephen Cassidy, who has supported the ordinance in the past, is afraid of losing the votes of Christian fundamentalists and ultra-conservatives if he supports one.
Please let him and the other members of the Council know that you support a well regulated medical marijuana dispensary in town.
Why is this important?
Council member Benny Lee has been working with Chief Spagnoli to get Christian fundamentalists to call for a ban on medical marijuana facilities - despite the fact that the told the Democratic Party that he supported medical marijuana. We need show the Council that there is support for a facility as well.
