Petition for a Ban on Political Advertising

To the President and Congress of the United States,

We the undersigned are petitioning for a ban on political advertisements. Without such a ban no candidate in a national election has any chance of winning who cannot meet astronomical expenditures for advertising. Therefore no candidate who wins is free from the unfairly weighted influence of very wealthy individuals or corporations and any useful ideas from outside the two party system are effectively kept out of the public debate which should be the lifeblood of Democracy. Campaigning for office should consist of a series of debates that include a multitude of political parties that don't espouse racial or ethnic hatred from across the spectrum, websites, and personal appearances of the candidates, not a relentless barrage of attack ads for and against candidates put forth by the only two parties that can afford modern campaigning. The two party system under which 40% to 50% of the voting age population does't vote will likely never be expanded into a more inclusive, truly democratic system without a ban on political advertisements.

You, the addressees of this petition, have been the beneficiaries of the political ad feeding frenzy. It's certainly ironic to ask this of you but you are the lawmakers. Please, if you have confidence in your own abilities to succeed in a fair election system, to be fair to all voters and candidates including yourselves, ban advertisements made in support of or against political candidates

Why is this important?

It's a lot more than an annoyance. It's the cog in the wheel that facilitates control over government by corporations.
