Petition for a Cleaner Astoria

We, residents of Astoria, are asking our representatives to get their act together and make of Astoria a clean, proud neighborhood.
It is a shame that in such a vibrant community, businesses and local officials cannot seem to curb the flow of garbage that is shamefully running down our streets. Steinway Avenue, at the epicenter of this recurrent curse, seems to be the most prone to letting it go even though thousands of shoppers stride its length each day.
There isn't a morning, going to the subway, where we do not have to fight through piles of flying papers, dancing bags, flyers... littered like nowhere else in New York City. There have been futile efforts to curb this malaise, from well intended solar-powered compactors (at $10,000 a pop) and sporadic cleaning crews. Steinway and its surrounding need to be taken more seriously.
We ask that you please look into:
-Pooling businesses together to hire cleaning crews on a full time basis.
-Ask the Department of Sanitation to pick up garbage twice a day: garbage cans and recycling cans are constantly overflowing.
-Forbid the distribution of coupons and flyers. They constantly littering the streets and should be made illegal in this sector.
-Seriously fine the litterbugs leaving their carry-outs wrappers and bottles all along our streets.
-Keep of kids's playground clean, safe, and locked at night.

If Astoria aspires to the ranks of true shopping and business district, it should act responsibly.
Peter Vallone, Carolyn Maloney, we urge you to look into this issue and find a proper remedy for Astoria.

Respectfully,

The Residents of Astoria, New York.

Why is this important?
